For Yunnan with parents or children, choose a comfortable walking pace and number of hotel moves before choosing attractions. A Dali and Lijiang family trip can start with two accommodation bases, using each for shorter outings. That leaves space for meals, rest and interests shared across generations.
Two bases, or an extension to Shangri-La?
For around seven days, discuss staying in one Dali hotel and one Lijiang hotel. Subtract arrival, departure and the transfer between cities before allocating sightseeing. Our 7-day Dali and Lijiang itinerary provides a daily example; this guide helps adapt the pace.
If Shangri-La matters to everyone, consider eight to ten days and allocate the extra nights and travel time explicitly. Longer does not automatically mean easier: if dates are fixed, remove another stop. Compare Lijiang to Shangri-La transport before deciding. Travellers with health concerns should seek appropriate professional advice about their intended activities.
Ask about the route from vehicle to room
Courtyard photographs cannot show how easily your family will reach a room. Ask where a vehicle can stop, the walking distance from there, the number of steps and whether a lift serves the booked floor. Confirm a low-floor or step-free request against the actual room category.
For children, check bed arrangements, extra-bed conditions, breakfast times, noise and pushchair storage. Compare dinner access and daily pickups alongside lake views or old-town atmosphere. Our Dali and Lijiang accommodation guide compares areas; the final decision needs the exact property address.
Choose one main outing and an optional short walk
A morning visit, lunch and rest, then an optional evening stroll can be a useful starting point. Ask each person about continuous walking, stairs and early starts. If some family members want separate activities, agree on meeting points, accompaniment and transport; additional vehicles or guides require separate confirmation.
In Lijiang, a short walk observing canals, bridges and courtyards can have a clear theme without visiting every old settlement. UNESCO describes the heritage property as including Dayan, Baisha and Shuhe, and highlights its water system. Choose the actual walk according to access and surfaces. Use our Yunnan rainy-season guide for flexible alternatives.
Count seats and luggage separately
For a vehicle quote, list adults, children and their ages, large suitcases, cabin bags and bulky items such as a pushchair. Passenger capacity does not establish usable luggage space. Request the appropriate child-seat specification, availability, installation arrangements and any charge in advance; do not assume every vehicle carries one.
Confirm hotel pickup points, breaks, service hours, waiting and route-change charges, and language arrangements. A driver, a guide and remote assistance are different services. English-language guiding requires explicit confirmation. Keep transfer days light; when comparing trains, include station access, waiting and luggage handling at both ends.
Would Shaxi justify another hotel move?
An overnight stay may appeal if your family wants a small-town evening and morning. Keeping two bases is equally reasonable when packing is the main concern. Decide which night Shaxi replaces or which extra day it needs. Read our Shaxi stop versus overnight comparison before adding the move.
Check the slow-travel conditions before choosing a format
A small-group departure's actual schedule determines whether it allows midday breaks, fewer hotel moves or less walking. A private plan's flexibility also needs agreement. Compare small-group and private travel, then check rooms, transfers and staff against the inclusions and exclusions checklist.
For parents, use the hotel access and daily-effort checklist; for children, see rooms, child restraints and daily routines. These are requirements to discuss, not claims that every facility or service is already available.
Send a brief that reflects your family
Include dates, arrival and departure cities, adults and children, walking and step preferences, room needs, bags, two priority places and a half-day you would like to leave free. State whether your budget is per person or for the group, and what it should cover.
Explore the Yunnan destination page, or use our Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La reference route as a starting point for removing stops. Its wider coverage needs reworking for fewer hotel moves. Request a Yunnan family slow-travel plan and ask to compare a two-base Dali–Lijiang option first.
Common questions
Do we need a private car throughout?
Not necessarily. Compare intercity trains with transfers, selected vehicle days and continuous service, including luggage handovers and the complete service scope.
Must a family trip include Shangri-La or a snow mountain?
No. Choose activities your family wants and can comfortably plan for. Confirm current access, bookings and services before departure.
