Dali and Lijiang in 7 Days: A Relaxed Yunnan Itinerary

For a relaxed first week in Yunnan, start with three nights in Dali and three nights in Lijiang. This seven-day itinerary includes arrival and departure days and assumes you arrive in Dali and leave from Lijiang. It gives families and travellers who prefer fewer hotel changes a practical starting point; activities, room arrangements and transport still need to match your group.

Is Shangri-La worth adding to a seven-day Yunnan trip?

Keep three nights in Dali and three in Lijiang if lakeside time, old-town walks and fewer hotel changes matter most. If Shangri-La is a priority, discuss two nights in each of the three destinations. That is a planning example, not a ready-to-book schedule: it depends on arriving in Dali on day one and having a workable departure from Shangri-La on day seven. A return through Kunming or Lijiang needs time reserved before allocating the nights.

  • Stay with two bases: retain more time for flexible days and unhurried visits, leaving Shangri-La for another trip.
  • Use three bases: allow another checkout, luggage move and intercity transfer. Remove activities from Dali and Lijiang when reducing each stay by a night.
  • Extend to nine days: if your connections allow, three nights in Dali, three in Lijiang and two in Shangri-La can be a starting point for discussion. Confirm the actual transfers and daily plan before booking.

Do I have to stay in Shangri-La to visit Tiger Leaping Gorge?

Treat the gorge visit and the overnight destination as separate decisions. Discuss a road excursion from Lijiang or a stop during a transfer towards Shangri-La. Explain whether you want a viewpoint visit or a hike: they require different time and walking allowances. Check access, road conditions and the return plan for your date. The Lijiang–Shangri-La railway is open, but train time does not include the road connections needed to visit the gorge.

What should I send for a useful private-tour proposal?

Start with: “Travel month: __; adults and children: __; seven days and six nights; arriving in __ and leaving from __; prefer Dali and Lijiang only / include Shangri-La; rooms needed: __; must-see places: __.” A month range is useful if your dates are flexible. Send your Yunnan trip preferences, then confirm the transport, accommodation, vehicle services and inclusions in the proposal. You do not need to supply passport numbers in an initial enquiry.

A Dali and Lijiang itinerary for 7 days and 6 nights

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Dali. Transfer to your accommodation and settle in for the first of three nights. Keep the evening optional: a nearby meal and short walk are enough after a long journey. Tell your host your arrival time before planning an activity.
  2. Day 2: Dali Old Town at your own pace. Choose a short walking route, with time for lunch and a break. If Cangshan is your priority, replace part of the day with a separately planned mountain visit rather than adding it to a full schedule.
  3. Day 3: Xizhou and a selected part of Erhai. Pick a village visit and lakeside stops that make sense together. You do not need to complete a circuit of the lake. Agree where you will walk, where the vehicle will meet you and which stops can be dropped.
  4. Day 4: Travel from Dali to Lijiang. Compare a train with transfers at both ends against a private car. Check in for three nights in Lijiang and leave room for an easy evening. A detour to Shaxi needs its own driving and visiting allowance.
  5. Day 5: Explore Lijiang and one neighbouring historic settlement. Combine a focused Dayan walk with either Baisha or Shuhe, without trying to cover every lane. UNESCO includes these three settlements within the Old Town of Lijiang World Heritage property.
  6. Day 6: Choose your main Lijiang excursion. If Jade Dragon Snow Mountain matters to you, confirm the particular excursion, tickets and transport before booking. A town walk or an available craft activity can provide an alternative. Leave the final choice open until your priorities and arrangements are clear.
  7. Day 7: Leave from Lijiang. Work backwards from your flight or train. Allow for the hotel pickup, transfer and departure procedures before adding any final sightseeing.

Adapt the week for children and different walking needs

Choose one main activity each day and place meals and rest around it. Send children's ages, stroller needs, luggage and preferred walking limits with your enquiry. Ask whether a suitable child seat can be confirmed for the requested vehicle. A private itinerary allows you to discuss the pace; it does not automatically make every excursion suitable for everyone.

Hotel location also changes the daily effort. A beautiful room is less helpful if the luggage walk or steps are a problem. Use our Dali and Lijiang accommodation-area guide before choosing exact properties.

What changes if you fly into and out of Kunming?

Put the actual connections into the plan before allocating sightseeing days. A late Kunming arrival may require an overnight stay, reducing the Dali stay; a return connection may take time from Lijiang. Do not add two transfers to this plan while keeping every activity. Check dated trains on China Railway 12306.

If Shangri-La is a priority, compare our seven-day Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La reference route. It covers more places and has a different pace. For a quieter week, keep the two bases here or extend the trip. Read the Lijiang to Shangri-La train and private-car comparison before deciding.

What should a private-trip quotation include?

  • The six hotel nights, named room types, room count, breakfast and cancellation terms.
  • Each transfer or vehicle day, luggage capacity, agreed stops and overtime arrangements.
  • Train tickets, attraction entry, cable cars and local shuttles listed separately as included or extra.
  • The driver's role, any guide service and the language support actually confirmed.
  • Children's arrangements, meals, single-room supplements and weather-related changes.

There is no single reliable price for every family or departure date. Compare quotations using the same dates, rooms and inclusions. A full-time vehicle is not essential when some days are mainly spent walking around your base.

Frequently asked questions

Is seven days enough for Dali and Lijiang with children?

It can provide a useful two-base plan when arrival and departure connections leave enough time. Share your family's preferred walking pace and rest needs before choosing the daily activities.

Do I need a private car for all seven days?

No. Compare a mix of town walks, trains and individual transfers, reserving a private vehicle for days when the agreed route or stops make it useful.
