For Dali and Lijiang in July or August, keep a stable hotel base and make the mountain and lakeside days interchangeable where bookings allow. A useful Yunnan rainy-season itinerary needs specific alternatives, not a promise that rain only falls in the afternoon or that the mountains will appear afterwards. The example below uses seven days and six nights, with three nights in Dali and three in Lijiang. Check forecasts, access and operating notices for your actual dates.

Rain, poor visibility and closures are different problems

China Weather’s Yunnan summer-travel guidance identifies June to August as the province’s general main flood season and highlights localised heavy rain. That is seasonal background, not a forecast for your holiday. A wet city street, cloud on a mountain and an official road restriction require different decisions. Sunshine at your hotel does not establish conditions at the excursion site.

  • Rain while the activity remains open: consider shorter outdoor sections, confirmed indoor visits and breaks. A rain symbol alone does not explain how every part of the day will be affected.
  • An open attraction with poor mountain visibility: check whether reservations can move before swapping days, or decide whether the experience still interests you without distant views.
  • A closure, road restriction or warning affecting the route: follow the operating instructions, then confirm cancellations and alternatives. An unmanaged path is not a substitute for a closed route.

Use the China Weather Yunnan forecast and warning pages alongside the attraction’s current notices and local transport confirmation. Historical weather averages cannot settle a decision about tomorrow.

A flexible 7-day Dali and Lijiang rainy-season itinerary

  1. Day 1: arrive in Dali. Check in and keep any walk short. Avoid committing to a mountain reservation immediately after an arrival whose timing is still uncertain.
  2. Day 2: Dali Old Town or a confirmed cultural activity. Treat this as a possible swap with day 3 only if transport, tickets and the activity’s amendment terms allow it.
  3. Day 3: Xizhou and one side of Erhai, or a suitable mountain outing. Choose a main direction. If conditions do not suit it, keep the replacement closer to your accommodation instead of driving repeatedly around the lake.
  4. Day 4: transfer from Dali to Lijiang. Prioritise the intercity journey, check-in and rest. Check transport arrangements as well as the weather in each city.
  5. Day 5: a candidate day for the Lijiang mountain activity. Proceed only when the specific activity is open, reservations are available and it suits your group. Otherwise consider a permitted swap with day 6 or a cultural alternative.
  6. Day 6: choose Dayan, Baisha or Shuhe. Use short walking sections and longer breaks. Keeping one area as the focus is more adaptable than trying to cover all three settlements.
  7. Day 7: departure. Protect the transfer and check-in time. Avoid making the last half-day your only opportunity for the mountain you most want to see.

This assumes arrival in Dali and departure from Lijiang, and includes both travel days. If you fly in and out of Kunming, first adjust the hotel nights and transfers using our 7-day Yunnan route and cost-planning guide. A flexible itinerary does not mean every ticket, room and vehicle booking can change for free.

What to do in Dali when it rains

Choose activities on the same side of the lake as your accommodation where practical. Replace an ambitious lakeside outing with a shorter walk that has an easy return, paired with a confirmed workshop, exhibition or other indoor visit. Once a venue is chosen, check its opening times, booking requirements, price, language support and pickup point. “Find something indoors” is not a confirmed alternative.

Leave time to pack away photography equipment and shelter without repeatedly changing the driver’s meeting point. For families, include toilets, lunch and an uncomplicated return to the room. Our Dali and Lijiang accommodation-area comparison helps you assess vehicle access and the walk from parking to the hotel in wet conditions.

What if Jade Dragon Snow Mountain plans change?

Separate the wish to see a mountain panorama from the wish to understand Lijiang. UNESCO’s account of the Old Town of Lijiang covers Dayan, Baisha and Shuhe and their heritage relationships. A focused walk around water channels, courtyards and local history can be a complete visit in its own right. Shorten the route on wet stone surfaces and respect any barriers or access instructions.

Ask the organiser to distinguish a weather closure, an open activity with poor visibility and a lack of suitable reservations. Those situations can have different amendment or refund outcomes. Any replacement should state what guiding and transport are included; unsupervised free time should not silently replace a paid guided activity.

Five things to put in a rainy-season booking

  • Who checks: name the contact who will review the forecast, attraction notices and road information, and agree when the following day’s plan will be discussed.
  • What can move: list the tickets, activities, trains, rooms and vehicle service that can change, with their deadlines and charges.
  • What replaces them: identify the alternative content, guiding language, duration and transfers, and whether a fresh booking is required.
  • How the price changes: separate refunds for the original activity from replacement charges and additional vehicle costs.
  • How transport connects: if a road plan changes, check dated train availability on China Railway 12306 and arrange both station transfers. A rail alternative is not automatically available.

For an extension north, read Lijiang to Shangri-La by train or car. For a small-town stop, compare a Shaxi day visit with an overnight stay. Our 7-day Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La reference route has a busier pace; fewer cities or extra days may be needed if weather flexibility is your priority.

Frequently asked questions

Does it rain all day in Yunnan in July and August?

A month does not describe every day or location. Use dated forecasts, warnings and operating notices. Do not depend on a claim that every shower will be brief or will be followed by a clear mountain view.

Can a cancelled mountain visit always be moved to tomorrow?

No. Reopening, reservation availability, transport and the rest of your group’s plans must all work. A candidate day gives you an option to discuss; it does not reserve new ticket capacity.

Can families still plan a Dali and Lijiang trip in wet weather?

Start with consecutive hotel nights, short walks and easy returns to accommodation, then assess activities against ages, stamina and actual conditions. Avoid relying on a long lakeside ride or a compulsory mountain outing as the only purpose of an entire day.
