Deciding where to stay in Dali and Lijiang is easier when you start with your evenings and pickup arrangements. Choose a Dali Old Town base if walking around the town is central to your stay; consider an Erhai lakeside property when time beside the lake is a priority. In Lijiang, compare specific addresses in Dayan, Shuhe or Baisha, rather than assuming one whole area will be quiet or convenient.
Dali Old Town or Erhai Lake?
Dali Old Town: shortlist this area if you want town walks and meals to form the core of your visit. Check the accommodation's exact position and the route from the vehicle drop-off. A listing described as “near the old town” can still involve a different walk from the one you imagine.
Erhai lakeside: shortlist this option if a lake-facing stay is part of the holiday itself. “Erhai” is not one neighbourhood: ask which village or shore the property is on. Verify whether the room actually has the advertised view and how you will reach meals and your planned day trips.
If you have only two or three nights, our starting suggestion is one Dali base. A second hotel means packing, checkout, another transfer and a new check-in. Split the stay only when the second location gives you something you specifically want, and show that moving time in the itinerary.
Dayan, Shuhe or Baisha in Lijiang?
UNESCO's Old Town of Lijiang property includes Dayan, Baisha and Shuhe. They are different places to compare, rather than interchangeable names for a single hotel area.
- Dayan: consider it when you want to spend much of your stay exploring Dayan itself. Ask how the exact street feels in the evening, where a car can stop and whether your room faces a busy lane or courtyard.
- Shuhe: consider it when visiting Shuhe is a priority and you are happy to arrange transport for time elsewhere in Lijiang. Do not treat “quieter than Dayan” as a guarantee about an individual room.
- Baisha: consider it when you deliberately want Baisha as your base. Confirm nearby food options, evening transport and the services available at the property before committing to several nights.
You can stay in one area and visit another. For a short trip, that is often simpler than changing hotels to experience each settlement. Check your transfer plan alongside our seven-day Dali and Lijiang itinerary.
Check luggage access before paying
Send the hotel pin and ask for the actual pickup or drop-off point. “Airport transfer included” does not explain the final stretch to the room. Establish these details in writing:
- Where the driver can legally stop, and how far you must walk from there.
- Whether the route has steps or uneven paving and whether luggage assistance is available.
- Who meets you, how to contact them and what happens if your arrival is delayed.
- Whether the room is upstairs and whether lift access or a suitable ground-floor room can be confirmed.
- Where bags can be stored before check-in or after checkout, if needed.
For a family, add bed arrangements, cot availability, bathroom layout and any stroller requirements. For anyone with mobility needs, ask for measurements or photographs of the relevant entrance and room access; a general “accessible” description may not answer your specific question.
Match the hotel to the next travel day
Compare complete journeys from each shortlisted hotel, not just the city names on a map. An early train means confirming the pickup point, breakfast and checkout arrangements the day before. If you are going north, the Lijiang to Shangri-La transport guide explains how hotel transfers fit around rail and road travel.
For trips including Kunming and Shangri-La, use the multi-city seven-day reference route to discuss the order of overnight stops. It is a busier alternative to spending three nights each in Dali and Lijiang.
Frequently asked questions
Is Shuhe always quieter than Dayan?
No neighbourhood label guarantees a quiet room. Ask about the exact street, nearby evening activity and the room's position before booking.
Can a driver pick me up at my old-town hotel door?
Do not assume door access. Confirm the legal meeting point, the luggage walk and any assistance with your hotel and transport provider.
How to request a useful hotel shortlist
Tell us your dates, room count, approximate accommodation budget, preferred area and what matters most: lake views, town walks, quiet evenings or easier vehicle access. Include any requirements that would rule a property out. We can use those priorities in a proposed itinerary; availability and individual facilities need confirmation for your dates.
Send your Yunnan accommodation and itinerary preferences, or start with the Yunnan destination guide. Comparing three well-matched options is more useful than booking by a neighbourhood label alone.
