Start with your real gateway
Do not estimate the trip from the label “an Ordos attraction” alone. The Ordos government’s Dalat Banner overview places the banner in northern Ordos across the Yellow River from Baotou. Your hotel may instead be in Dongsheng, Kangbashi or farther away in Hohhot. Use the exact hotel and departure station to plan transfers. If a flight follows the visit, protect that connection first rather than drawing a convenient-looking desert stop onto a map.
Decide whether you want dunes, activities or a resort
A 2026 local government report places Xiangshawan at the eastern end of the Kubuqi Desert and describes different sightseeing, activity and holiday areas. Ask your companions to choose priorities: desert views, photographs, family activities or time at the hotel. Select one or two main aims. Request a written list of what the ticket and internal transport cover. A ride appearing in promotional photographs does not establish that it is included or operating on your date.
Choose a day visit for a focused introduction
A day visit can work when you are already based in a suitable nearby city and want scenery plus a small number of activities. It avoids moving luggage and changing hotels. Show road arrival, internal access, activities, lunch and return in one plan, with queueing and rest included. Make optional rides truly optional for companions who dislike heights or riding. Dinner near your existing hotel is easier to adjust than a distant reservation after an uncertain departure from the site.
Stay overnight if the hotel experience appeals
An overnight stay can separate touring and rest without a hurried city return. It does not guarantee a sunset, sunrise, stars or every advertised activity. Ask the hotel to confirm your room category, meals, luggage transfer, access arrangements and included activities. Compare what belongs to the room package and what costs extra. Use photographs of the property and category actually offered. Accommodation described as a desert hotel is not necessarily inside the same visitor area as another property.
Check how an interrupted day would work
The region’s official summer travel notice highlights heat, wind, sand and storm conditions. Include shaded breaks, drinking water and the option to reduce activities according to the weather. Before entering, ask how you would return to the meeting point, hotel or road vehicle if a service pauses, and how unused activities are handled. Families should check operator conditions before choosing each activity, including applicable age, height and other suitability restrictions rather than leaving the decision until arrival.
Compare the complete day and overnight versions
Use the same dates, group size and arrival and departure cities for both quotations. Check transfers, admissions, internal transport, activities, rooms and meals separately. If grassland follows, assess the connecting road journey; a package called “grassland and desert” does not make the two stops neighbours. A day version can suit light luggage and familiar city facilities. An overnight version can suit travellers who value the resort component and are comfortable comparing room packages, seasonal availability and changing prices.
