Xiamen in Three Days: Old Streets, Gulangyu and the Coast

Make sure you really have three days

Three hotel nights do not necessarily provide three full sightseeing days. Subtract arrival formalities, the trip into town and your departure transfer before planning. Use one hotel on Xiamen Island, with a day each for the old city, Gulangyu and the southern coast. This suits first visits centred on architecture and sea views. If Fujian Tulou or Quanzhou is a priority, add another usable day instead of inserting a distant outing into the gaps.

Day one: find your rhythm in the old city

Begin around Zhongshan Road, pause over lunch, then extend towards Datong Road and the Kaihe Road neighbourhood if energy allows. The official account of Xiamen’s old streets helps place these streets and Bashi market in context. Treat the market as a working place: keep paths clear for shopping and deliveries. Choose a few small dishes rather than turning the afternoon into a queue-based eating competition, then finish close to your hotel.

Day two: give Gulangyu an unhurried visit

The island works best as the main event of a full day. Its value is in the relationship between streets, buildings and landscape, explained in the UNESCO heritage description. Choose one neighbourhood walk and one garden or indoor attraction, with a seated lunch between them. Agree a comfortable limit for hills and steps before setting out. Photography stops should leave room for other members of the group to sit and enjoy the place.

Secure the ferry before fixing the order

Use the ferry operator’s visitor information to confirm the tourist route, departure terminal and valid identification. Swap the island and coastal days if ticket availability or weather makes that sensible, remembering any attraction bookings that also need changing. Avoid attaching a tightly timed crossing to an arriving flight. If sea conditions affect services, handle the reservation first and use an island-free neighbourhood day while you review the available alternatives.

Day three: pair Shapowei with one coastal section

Fujian’s introduction to Shapowei describes a former sheltered harbour with contemporary cultural spaces. Explore the waterfront neighbourhood, then choose a manageable section near Baicheng or farther along towards Huangcuo. You do not need to walk the entire coastal road. Use a separate transfer between distant sections and retreat indoors when the afternoon feels too hot. A university or temple visit requires its own current entry check; proximity is not permission to enter.

Choose a base and know what to remove

The old-city edge is practical for meals and the first two days; a coastal base suits travellers who value hotel downtime more. Check the actual entrance and vehicle access rather than relying on a sea-view label. With only two full days, retain the old city and Gulangyu, reducing the coast to one flexible evening. Before arrival, put your hotel, full station names, ferry order and each day’s main activity on one clear list to prevent unnecessary cross-town journeys.

Questions before you go

Should I add Tulou to these three days?

Add a day or replace a whole city day if Tulou is essential; it is not a coastal half-day add-on.

Do I need a car and guide every day?

Choose by task. Street walks, the island crossing and a coastal transfer involve different needs.
