Define what seven days actually means

This route counts arrival as day one and departure as day seven. It works most naturally when you arrive in Shanghai and continue from Hangzhou. If your flight home leaves Shanghai, return there on day six and sleep in your departure city. Write down the flights and hotel nights before assigning attractions. A late arrival or a tiring international journey can leave far less usable time than the calendar suggests.

Days one and two: let Shanghai absorb the arrival

Use the first day for check-in, a nearby meal and a short walk if you feel ready. On day two, a Bund riverfront walk gives the trip a clear urban beginning; pair it with one neighbourhood you genuinely want to explore. Keep the river visit flexible if the arrival weather is poor. There is no need to exhaust every Shanghai landmark before moving on to gardens and lakeside scenery.

Days three and four: give Suzhou one complete day

Travel to Suzhou on the third morning, arrange your bags at the accommodation and keep the afternoon to a manageable old-town walk. Make one classical garden the focus of day four, followed by lunch and nearby streets before continuing to Hangzhou later. Garden enthusiasts can stay another night and trade away the second Hangzhou touring day. Avoid attaching three timed attractions to a day that already includes changing cities.

Days five and six: keep Hangzhou adaptable

Dedicate day five to a selected part of the West Lake landscape. Walk one shoreline, pause for lunch and decide whether a boat adds something you want. Reserve day six for tea culture, another lake perspective or a personal interest rather than making a full circuit compulsory. With a Shanghai flight on day seven, return on the sixth afternoon; keep that morning near a practical pickup point.

Count the entire transfer, not the railway segment

Check travel dates and exact station names through China Railway’s official information. Then add hotel pickup, station procedures, arrival transport and check-in. The time on the train is only one component and cannot determine the next attraction booking by itself. Leave an unreserved block around each move. Ask about bag storage if the room is not ready, and agree who carries the documents and where the group meets.

Remove a city when the week becomes too compressed

This combination suits travellers who want contrasting urban, garden and lake experiences. With only four or five days, young children or a strong dislike of packing, Shanghai plus either Suzhou or Hangzhou can provide more satisfying evenings. Protect meals and recovery instead of shortening everything to retain three names. Confirm timed admissions, hotel locations, transfer coverage and weather alternatives before payment, giving your most important experience priority.

Questions before you book

Does this work with return flights to Shanghai?

Yes. Return on day six and shorten Hangzhou accordingly, leaving the final night in Shanghai.

Are two nights in Suzhou compulsory?

No. This outline uses one night, then sightseeing before travelling on during day four. Garden enthusiasts can add another night.
